The Second CourtCase: The JuryRoom Day II Part I

(Jurors enter back into the juryroom, Four glaring at Twelve, Five looking down at her feet, and everyone else slightly out of sorts)

(They all sit.)

(There is silence...)

Eleven (Slams hand down): That's it! (She stands) Everyone stop sulking! Someone's life is on the line here and all we're doing is sitting here like a group of invalids! For god's sakes, we need to decide this young man's fate!

Four: You vote she's a he?

Eleven: I'm not expressing my vote right now. I'm telling you to get off your asses and vote! This is not going to happen unless we are all participating! A full day has already passed right by us and we have not made much progress. If we do not have a deicision by the end of today we are a hung jury. Do you all understand?

(Some jurors nod.)

(There is more silent, Eleven afraid she spoke up for nothing.)

(Someone, however, shows that they were listening)

Eight: I vote not guilty.

Four: Really?

Three (To Eight): Thank you.

Four: Wait a minute, why did you suddenly change your mind? You were against this at first.

Eight (Takes a sigh): I was told when I was twenty fifty that I was no longer popular. That the world had forgotten all about me. But from eighteen to thirty-five I was America's sweetheart. Then from age thirty-six to forty-two I was another actress. By the time I was fifty the world had moved on. I was a nobody.
But it was all I wanted to do. It was all I had ever wanted: To be famous forever. To die famous and to live famous. My life couldn't be over just yet.
But it was.
Us taking away Greene's right is just like ending my career and ending my life of being who I truly am.
Charlie's innocent.

(There's a long silence)

Six: My parents kicked me out the house when they found out I was gay. (All jurors look at Six) They told me I was dead to them.
Even though I've kept my spirits up the feeling of the life I had always wanted with my family is now gone, and I will never get it back.
Don't do this to Charlie. It's Hell in itself to not be who you're meant to be.
Don't do it.

Eleven: We should vote.

Four: You're not the fucking foreman!

Twelve: She's sure as hell saying more than you're saying! (Four is baffled to hear Twelve speak to him like that, but cracks his jaw and relaxes.)

Eleven: All who think Charlie Greene is innocent? (Jurors Two, Three, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, and Twelve raise their hands. One looks at Four, who is staring at him mouthing 'no'. One considers all the options, but pure pain and pure torture can come in every day, and prison was just another place.)

(Thus with a grin he raises his hand, Four's eye widening at the sight of defeat)

Four: N...No!

Eleven: All those who think he's guilty?

Four: You should all have your hands up now!

Nine: No way.

Four: This isn't over!

Two: Give up.

Four: We have eighteen more hours of Day Two! I'll have you back to guilty by then!
